What a party! Everyone was dressed up in island attire for CSC’s 17th Annual Spirit of Sailing “Bermuda Bound” Gala this past Saturday (April 23). The evening benefited Community Sailing of Colorado’s scholarship, adaptive and outreach sailing programs. We are excited to announce that we raised almost $65,000, which included $15,000 for our scholarship fund for deserving children in our community.

As you entered, you were greeted by our Junior Volunteers who welcomed you and introduced themselves. Guests then moved to the 4th floor for our silent auction and cocktail reception. Mixed drinks and local beers were flowing from our beverage sponsors that included Gosling’s Run, The Brew on Broadway and Strange Craft Beer Company. Most grabbed a photo op at the front by Francine Ulatowski with Land & Sea Photography. The silent auction featured beautiful works of art, vacation homes, sailing gear and more. With views of the front range in sight, the bidding went fast as the auction winded down.

Everyone moved down to the 1st floor for dinner and live auction. Jim Ulatowski, CSC Board Member & local sailor, greeted everyone and talked about his friend Roy Burley. CSC honored Roy with naming our scholarship fund after he lost his long battle with cancer ended in 2015. Roy meant a lot to our program and sailing community, and we hope to continue providing opportunities on behalf of Roy and his family.

Jim next introduced CSC’s Executive Director, Brandon Kass. Brandon thanked everyone and reinforced how much all them are helping make sailing accessible to all in Colorado. He also shared great news that CSC was recently recognized as a US Sailing Community Sailing Program. Brandon then introduced the 2016 Spirit of Sailing Award Recipient Juli James. Juli has been an amazing volunteer, supporter and donor that has made CSC a stronger organization. She is truly deserving of this award for her commitment to CSC and its programs. Juli was also the 2016 Gala Chair and her charm was felt on the entire event.

Next was the Heads or Tails that our authentic auctioneer (Jim Fick) conducted. The prize was a week long timeshare in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. It was a battle to the finish but Katy Lee Sterett took home the prize. We then went right into the live auction with items from weeklong stay in the mountains to opening pheasant hunting trip in Lake Okoboji, Iowa. All was very entertaining with lots of action from across the floor.

CSC’s Program Director, Phil Muller, took the stage to introduce a very special young sailor. He shared a story on inspiration and challenges as Marnix made his recovery from a terrible skiing accident this past December. Sailing his new boat was the end goal for this motivated 16-year-old who got a chance to go sailing for the first time since his accident just a week before the event. Phil inspired the room as we moved into raising $15,000 for the Roy Burley Scholarship Fund to provide children with scholarships to our program. The energy was incredible and the donors were simply amazing!

Jim U. thanked everyone and introduced the evening’s entertainment, The Quincy Ave R&B Band from Kent Denver School of Music. The dance party began as everyone got a chance to celebrate the evening. The entire night was incredible and simply a party not to miss. Thank you so much to all of those who supported our Gala.
