When the winter winds start to blow and Colorado’s lakes and reservoirs start to freeze over, sailors grow restless. Unless you’ve got a ticket to the West Coast, East Coast, or the Caribbean, or connections to the brave ice-sailors out in the mountain lakes, you might go from October to April without setting foot in a boat. Our solution for these months away from sailing is the Educational Series, where the sailing community comes together despite the weather for a chance to not only socialize and recant tales of adventure and regattas, but to also brush up on some essential sailing knowledge and skills. At these sessions, sailors of all skill levels come together with one goal in mind: keep the spirit of sailing alive until the season starts again.

This 2025-2026 off-season is our first time running the Educational Series, and so far it has been a great success. We hold our sessions in a couple of breweries twice a month so that everyone has a better chance of attending, with one location in Boulder and one in Denver. We are so grateful to Wild Provisions Beer Project and Woods Boss Brewing Company for graciously hosting us and serving delicious drinks to all in attendance.

The topics we cover range from essential yet basic concepts like the Fundamentals of Wind – which goes over points of sail and sail controls – to Racing Tactics – a more in depth look at how to get the leading edge at the races including starting sequences, favored starts, and laylines. Our next two sessions on April 2nd and 8th will cover what to expect and what to do on a racing day, including the difference between series racing and regattas, and a meet and greet with local sailing clubs and organizations like DSA and SAIL.

With the success we have experienced so far, we are excited to say the Educational Series will be returning next year, so be sure to follow along with our newsletter. We hope to see you at the next one, and be sure to RSVP to let us know that you’re coming!
