Expert Level

Description
Utilizing a mixed fleet of double-handed 420s and single-handed Lasers, campers will continue to hone in boat-specific skills. Using c420s with a mainsail, jib, and spinnaker, this class focuses on the skills needed to juggle all three sails successfully. Campers in this camp must come with a solid working knowledge of how to rig and sail a c420 both as a crew and skipper in various conditions. Little time will be spent on review leaving more time to focus on expert skills.
In Lasers, campers will take solo sailing to the next level in larger, more responsive boats while increasing expertise in all aspects of sailing. According to the manufacturer, the ideal weight for the smallest 4.7 Laser sail is around 110-130 lbs. Wind conditions and skillset play a factor in instructor’s discretion to maintain safety when it comes to smaller campers.
Pre-Requisite: This camp is for sailors who have had at least 1 week of Advanced 420 Sailing Camp OR previous experience sailing c420s and/or Lasers, and have an instructor recommendation.
Moving Up: Campers need at least 1 week of Advanced 420 Camp and an instructor recommendation to move up to the expert level or to become a Junior Sailing Instructor in Training (JSIT).
Location: Boulder Reservoir
Camp Hours: Typically Monday through Friday, 9:00AM – 3:30PM daily
Ages: 12 – 17
What do we need to bring?
- Water
- Lunch
- Sunscreen labeled with your child’s first and last name
- Towel and change of clothes (weather changes rapidly in Colorado. Having a change of clothes and a towel works wonders when a thunderstorm rolls in and the temperature drops.)
- Close-toed shoes (old sneakers work great). For safety reasons, flip-flops are not allowed.
What if there is Inclement Weather?
We plan to sail each day of camp, weather permitting. The safety of our campers and staff is our top priority. If severe weather prevents on-water activities, we transition to sheltered STEM lessons and engaging camp games until it is safe to return to the water.
