Adult Dinghy Sailing Foundations

Intermediate Level

Register >
Description

Join us for once-weekly, 3-hour sessions over 4 weeks, designed for adults who have completed our Beginner Sailing Class and are ready to sail independently without an instructor onboard. In this course, you’ll sail in pairs on Tiwal sailboats to start, developing the skills needed to navigate a small boat with a partner. By the fourth session, participants might have the opportunity to level up to a c420 sailboat. Participants will focus on boat handling, proper sail trim through all points of sail, tacking, jibing, and capsize recovery. These open-hulled sailboats are designed for an exciting and immersive experience, so be prepared to get wet! Sign up solo or bring a group of friends, and take the next step in your sailing journey. Passing this course will certify CSC Dinghy Access Members to take out a club Zest or Topaz boat.

Pre-Requisite: Adult Learn to Sail Class.

For those looking to join this class based on previous experience elsewhere, you should already know how to do the following: attach and hoist sails properly and safely, know the difference between sailing upwind vs downwind and how your sails should be positioned accordingly, identify all points of sail (close haul, tight reach, beam reach, broad reach, run, head to wind), avoid collisions, and perform tacking and jibing under control.

Moving Up: Adult Dinghy Sailing Performance & Proficiency – Refine your skills in a c420 racing dinghy and option to try out a Laser if desired

Location: Boulder Reservoir

Day: Tuesdays – 4 week session

Time: 5pm – 8pm (June, July, & August) | 4:30pm – 7:30pm (September)

What do we need to bring?
  • Closed-toed shoes are required
  • Bring your own water for drinking
  • Remove all jewelry (especially rings)
  • Gloves are recommended: bike gloves and gardening gloves work great
  • Long hair should be secured in a low ponytail or braid
  • If you already have your own PFD, you’re welcome to wear it. Otherwise, we’ll provide you with one.
  • Towel
  • Sunscreen
  • Wear a bathing suit or clothes you don’t mind getting wet in. Colorado weather can change quickly. Cloud cover, rain, and a windy day can suddenly feel cold. Please pack a sweatshirt, or rain pants/rain jacket for blocking wind, and a dry change of clothes if you wish.
What if there is Inclement Weather?

Weather in CO can be tricky and ever-changing. We will do our best to notify you at least 2 hours before class begins if we need to cancel.
